The size and architectural finish of the North Station, built in 1917, reflect Valencia's importance as a railway city. Other interesting monuments include the former convent of San Pablo and Plaza de San Agustín.

If you are interested in the Enlightenment, visit the Valencian Museum of Enlightenment and Modernity. Another iconic building is the market, where its eight thousand square metres offer everything you need to prepare an outstanding Valencian paella.

Other monuments of special historical and cultural value include the church of Santos Juanes and the Silk Exchange, built in 1498, as well as the parish church of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir.

The Palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas houses the National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts, with an important collection of Spanish and international ceramics. The Museum of Fine Arts also holds over 3,000 paintings by great masters from the 14th century to the present.

To experience Valencian folk art, visit in March during the world-famous Fallas. The city is decorated with an impressive number of ninots, cardboard monuments several metres high. Women wear traditional Fallera dresses.

What are the best driving routes around Valencia?

Paterna

Just 10 kilometres from central Valencia lies Paterna. Its most notable monument is the Arab tower, around fifteen metres tall and a symbol of the town. From Paterna, it is easy to reach Manises, an important pottery centre with a Ceramics Museum.

Sagunto

Sagunto is full of history and monuments of great historical and cultural value. Located 30 kilometres from central Valencia, it is well worth the trip. The complex including its imposing castle is a National Monument. Nearby are the Roman Theatre, the chapel of La Sangre, the Jewish quarter, the Temple of Diana, the church of Santa María and the Roman Circus.

Gandía

Just 70 kilometres from central Valencia lies this remarkable fishing and sporting town, a favourite summer holiday destination. Gandía has a beautifully preserved old town, a seafront promenade and magnificent beaches. The Ducal Palace is a highlight, alongside the church of Santa María, the Town Hall, San Marcos hospital and the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara. Fine sandy beaches line the coast, including Nord, Venecia and Varadero.
